Fan killed in Argentina violence
One man has been killed and another badly injured after police and hooligans clashed before an Argentine first division match between Estudiantes and Lanus in La Plata on Monday.
Officials at the Ciudad de La Plata stadium called the match off at half-time after news of the death and injury emerged.
"The police reported that a supporter [of Lanus] had died and, in the face of this situation, it was necessary to suspend the match," Enrique Lombardi, the Estudiantes president, said.
Lombardi added that the decision had been agreed by both clubs, and had been taken for "humanitarian reasons".
Estudiantes coach Mauricio Pellegrino said: "This violence doesn't come from football - it's a social problem. Football reflects the violence in society."
The development came days after another game in Argentina, between Velez Sarsfield and All Boys, was abandoned amid crowd violence.
