Valencia confirm Albelda exit

David Albelda is to leave Valencia after 15 years having not being offered a new deal by the club.

David Albelda has become Valencia's longest serving player
David Albelda has played over 450 games for Valencia

Albelda’s current contract ends in June and he was told the news in a short meeting with new coach Miroslav Djukic [a former Los Che team-mate], new club president Amadeo Salvo and continuing sporting director Braulio Vazquez on Monday afternoon.

While the player, who turns 36 in September, then drove past reporters at Valencia’s Paterna training facility without commenting, the club later released a statement via its official website wishing the player - who has reportedly received offers to continue his career in the U.S. - all the best in the future.

“Valencia Club de Futbol has today communicated to David Albelda the decision to end his connection with the club, putting an end to a brilliant career of 15 seasons at Mestalla,” the statement said. "Valencia wish David Albelda, one of the most important players in the history of the team and a living legend of 'valencianismo', the best of luck in his future professional career and his personal life. Albelda leaves an indelible mark on everyone connected with Valencia and at the club, which will always be his home."

Valencia-born Albelda played over 450 games for the club, winning the Primera Division title in 2002 and 2004, the 2004 UEFA Cup, 2004 European Supercup and 2008 Copa del Rey, and playing in the 2001 Champions League final.

Former Serbia and Real Valladolid coach Djukic replaced outgoing boss Ernesto Valverde last week. His team-building plans are constrained by the club’s €400 million debts and the team having missed out on Champions League football for next term.

Stars including Roberto Soldado, Adil Rami and Jeremy Mathieu could be sold, while targets reportedly include Real Mallorca attacker Giovanni Dos Santos and former Valencia defender Raul Albiol, who is currently a reserve at Real Madrid.
