Toby Alderweireld has told Ajax he has no plans to extend his contract and has begun to talk up a move to the Premier League or Bundesliga.
The Belgium international defender, 24, is contracted to the Eredivisie champions until 2014 but has strongly hinted he could leave the club this summer.
“England and Germany are the best leagues, where I can think I can take the next step,” he told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.
“I do not want to play for a team at the bottom of their league. I want to leave Ajax for a nice club, otherwise I’ll just stay in Amsterdam.”
Bayer Leverkusen general manager Rudi Voller scouted the player during Belgium’s 2-1 win against Serbia on Friday and Alderweiereld’s agent Soren Lerby has claimed they are keen.
“I know that Toby is on their list,” he told Bild. “The next few days I will consult with Toby on his future. One thing is clear: His contract at Ajax runs out in 2014, and he will not prolong.
“The Bundesliga is super and Bayer would be a very good club for Toby.”
Alderweireld has also been linked with a transfer to Premier League, with Liverpool and Tottenham believed to be among the chasers.
