Bayern back on Breno's radar

Brazilian defender Breno could be on the verge of a shock return to football, and his former club Bayern Munich, if the terms of his prison sentence are relaxed.

Last July, the 23-year-old was jailed for more than three years after being found guilty of setting fire to his Munich home.

He was arrested and charged after his house was burnt down on the day he learned he needed another operation on his injured knee, having spent two years struggling to recover from torn cruciate ligaments.

But Breno's good behaviour over the first year of his sentence means the former under-23 international is under consideration for day release, potentially enabling him to return to competitive football.

"We are still in exploratory talks, discussing with the foreigners' registration office and the law enforcement attorneyship," Michael Stumpf, the head of the Munich prison where Breno is being detained, said.

Should day release be granted, Breno would be able train with a local club before being returned to prison by an agreed time.

And, according to Stumpf, Bayern could well be a taker. "We are in contact with the club," he told Die Welt.

"Once all talks have been concluded, then we will have to see if anything can come of it. Bayern could well be a future employer."

Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
