Palmgren quits over death threats

Roger Palmgren has resigned as Namibia coach after only a month in the role as a result of death threats.

• Moonda: Watch out for Groups A, D

Palmgren, a Swede who has spent the majority of his career in Africa, took charge of Namibia at the start of May and oversaw goalless draws in a friendly with Zambia and a World Cup qualifier against Malawi.

However, he has opted to walk away from the position before Wednesday's qualifier with Nigeria.

A statement read: "The president of the Namibia Football Association John Muinjo hereby announces the resignation of the Brave Warriors' head coach Roger Palmgren who tendered his resignation with immediate effect this weekend due to serious threats directed towards him and his family, as stated in his resignation letter."

Muinjo, speaking to BBC Sport, added: "It would have been good for us to investigate this but he did not talk to us prior to his resignation.

"Roger did not raise the issue with us so we have not been able to try to find out who is responsible for these threats - we have not had a direct discussion with him. We have never had such a problem before and I am worried - if it is true. I'm not 100% sure if it is true. It would have been good if we had had the chance to investigate."

Former Namibia midfielder Ricardo Mannetti has been named caretaker coach.
