Fonseca named new Porto coach

Portuguese champions Porto have appointed Pacos de Ferreira coach Paulo Fonseca as their new boss, and he has put pen to paper on a two-year contract.

Fonseca, 40 - a former central defender who only began his professional coaching career two years ago - attracted the attention of bigger clubs as he took Pacos, a club of limited resources, to their highest-ever finish last season.

He steered them to third in the championship table, earning them a Champions League qualifying playoff place.

In a statement to the market regulator CMVM, Porto confirmed: "We have reached an agreement with Fonseca, who will become the main team coach."

Fonseca succeeds Vitor Pereira - who left to take up a new job at Al-Ahli, in Saudi Arabia - and the new boss told Portuguese TV: "I'm highly motivated to keep Porto's winning streak going.

"I like balance in my teams and have them dominate possession. That must be a reality at Porto."

Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa denied that appointing a young coach represented a risk for his club.

"He has already had more success in his career than previous coaches who came into the job and were successful," he said.

"I don't know of anyone who picked up a team like Pacos de Ferreira, started the season with the goal of not being relegated, and then took it to Europe, finishing ahead of clubs like Braga and Sporting Lisbon."
