Valdes 'should leave Barcelona now'

Former Barcelona goalkeeping coach Juan Carlos Unzue has advised Victor Valdes to leave the club in the summer, saying a clean break would be best for both parties.

In May, Valdes, 31, confirmed that he would not sign a new deal with the Catalan club, but said it was possible that he could stay at the Camp Nou for the last 12 months of his existing deal.

But Unzue, who has worked at Barca under Frank Rijkaard, Josep Guardiola and Tito Vilanova, told Catalunya Radio the uncertainty was not ideal for either Valdes or the club.

"It would be easier and better if he left now and not next year,” he said. “[The situation] is a bit messy, left open between the two possibilities - to go or to stay on.”

Unzue, whose departure from Barca 12 months ago had been unexpected, has previously suggested that a young keeper such as Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen, would be preferable to a more experienced option like Liverpool’s Pepe Reina.

He said it would not be easy to replace Valdes, but that coming into a winning team would help a youngster settle quickly.

“There is always a fear of change, and although a player can be vital as Victor has been, nobody is irreplaceable," he added.

“If a new keeper comes now, if he is young, and if he finds a strong team, that will help him. Now, and even more with the signing of Neymar, I am sure that the team is strong.”
