Salah hat-trick inspires Egypt to victory

Mohamed Salah's hat-trick earned Egypt a 4-2 win over Zimbabwe which left them on the verge of the final round of qualification for next year's World Cup.

Mohamed Abou Trika's opener was cancelled out by Knowledge Musona but Basle striker Salah made it 2-1 before half-time and struck twice more in the second half, either side of Knowledge Billiat's consolation.

The result meant Egypt extended the only remaining 100% record in second-round qualifying and would see them into the third stage if Mozambique could avoid defeat to second-placed Guinea in Sunday's other Group G clash.

But two goals apiece from Mohamed Yattara, Sadio Diallo and Ibrahima Traore gave Guinea a 6-1 win in that game to keep the group alive. Helder Pelembe replied for Mozambique.

Egypt have 12 points from four games, with Guinea second on seven.

Rennes winger Jonathan Pitroipa scored the only goal with nine minutes remaining as Burkina Faso beat Niger to move second in Group E.

Togo produced a shock Group I win over Cameroon to drop the Indomitable Lions off the top of the standings.

Komlan Amewou scored a 32nd-minute opener and substitute Lalawele Atakora made a swift impact by scoring the second three minutes after coming on.

Cameroon slipped below Libya, who were held 0-0 by DR Congo on Friday, on goal difference while back-markers Togo moved within two points in a close group.

In Group H, leaders Algeria won 3-1 in Benin thanks to Islam Slimani's first-half brace after Rudy Gestede had given Benin the lead.

Debutant Nabil Ghilas scored Algeria's third just four minutes after his introduction, by which time Benin's Badarou Nana Nafiou had been sent off.

Mali's challenge stalled after they could only manage a 1-1 home draw with bottom side Rwanda.

Meddie Kagere put the visitors in front shortly after the half-hour mark although their hopes of a first win in the pool receded when Harouna Niyonzima was sent off after 65 minutes.

Mali capitalised on their man advantage 12 minutes later, Mahamadou N'Diaye scoring, although they could not find a winner.
