Casillas concerned over Spain spot

Iker Casillas believes his lack of playing time at Real Madrid has pushed him out of the frame for Spain's No.1 spot, despite starting in Sunday's 2-1 friendly win over Haiti.

Casillas had little chance to prove himself in the first-half of La Roja's victory, before being replaced by Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina at the break.

The Spain captain experienced a frustrating domestic season, with injury and the form of Diego Lopez pushing him out of a regular starting place at the Bernabeu.

Casillas is concerned a shortage of match fitness puts his place in the squad for next week's Confederations Cup in jeaopardy.

"I've been out about four months," Casillas told reporters after the match. "After so long without playing I was both happy and nervous tonight.

"I see myself fighting from a spot from the start with a disadvantage to my peers, going up against Pepe and Victor. Not playing for long puts a dent in a player like me. Sometimes it's good to go through that, to appreciate it more when you play."

The 32-year-old also spoke of his relationship with Real team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa after recent claims that the pair are in a feud over their views on Jose Mourinho.

"We have finished the season with Madrid, and now it's a new period with the Spain squad," Casillas added. "Alvaro has his point of view and that must be respected. I don't have to talk further about him. The important thing is that I've returned to playing."
