Baldini, who has accepted the blame for the disappointments of Roma's last two seasons, is now expected to take up a role with Tottenham Hotspur, with Andre Villas-Boas having requested a sporting director.

Baldini, who worked alongside Fabio Capello as part of the England national team, said on the club's official website: "I want to thank AS Roma's ownership for the opportunity to work together. I have enjoyed my time in Rome and wish the best to the club, the players and fans."

The club's chief executive, Italo Zanzi, added: "We appreciate Franco's contribution to the club. AS Roma's top priority continues to be success on the field.

"We are very confident in our future and look forward to building on the excellent talent base that we have assembled under the last two years. Walter Sabatini and I will work closely with president Pallotta as we finalise our coaching staff and player roster for this season."
