FIGC impose tougher racism sanctions

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has implemented new sanctions to deal with racism, including the closure of parts of a stadium.

A meeting between FIGC officials saw an increase in punishments for individuals and clubs found guilty of racial abuse in an attempt to comply with UEFA's most recent rules.

A minimum ten-match ban will now be imposed upon abusive supporters, while more serious cases could result in sections of a stadium being closed.

But the penalties increase significantly for repeat offenders, with a club fined €50,000 and forced to play a match behind closed doors if supporters are found guilty of racism a second time.

Further offences result in more than one match behind closed doors, while forfeiting a match, points deductions and disqualification from a competition will also be considered.

According to Football Italia, an FIGC statement read: "[Any person] who insults the human dignity of a person or group of persons, including reasons tied to colour of skin, race, religion or ethnic origin, will receive a ban of at least 10 games or any other sanction considered appropriate."

If a match is suspended by a referee due to any form of discriminatory behaviour, the win could be awarded to the other team.
