Florentino Perez pledges 'la Decima'

Florentino Perez has promised to keep striving for Real Madrid's 10th European crown after he began a new term as the club's president.

Perez was unopposed in the club's elections and has immediately turned his attentions to replacing departed coach Jose Mourinho and trying to secure the future of star forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

Speaking at his investiture today, Perez said: "We start a new term with the immense responsibility of leading the biggest club in history.

"I have only words of thanks to the members of Real Madrid because their support is the key.

"In the last four years we have advanced and taken a quantum leap. But the future has already begun and, like you, I want more. We will work to achieve new challenges.

"Throughout our history we have won many titles and we will continue to work for the 10th (European Cup)."

Mourinho was confirmed as Chelsea manager on Monday after leaving Madrid at the end of the season.

Carlo Ancelotti remains high on Madrid's list of potential replacements, although the Italian's current employers Paris St Germain have so far remained adamant he must honour the remaining year on his contract.

Madrid are also seeking to secure Ronaldo's future, with the player suggesting he will see out the remaining two years on his deal and then leave.

Perez has heaped praise on the Portugal international of late in hope of persuading him his long-term future is in Madrid.
