Gattuso in line for Palermo job

Gennaro Gattuso appears set to take the manager's job at Palermo after he was sacked as boss of Swiss club FC Sion.

Gattuso, 35, joined Sion as a player last summer before taking over as manager in February - the club's fifth of the season - but was ousted after they finished sixth in the table.

Palermo are expected to part company with coach Giuseppe Sannino following their relegation to Serie B after a nine-year stay in the top flight, and president Maurizio Zamparini has earmarket Gattuso as the man to replace him at the helm.

Zamparini told Radio 2: "I like Gattuso a lot. He will be the next coach of Palermo as soon as I conclude my battle of wills with [current Palermo manager Giuseppe] Sannino."

Gattuso himself has confirmed he is interested in the role, telling mediagol.it: "I will meet with the president and evaluate. In any case, I know that Palermo has a great heritage, and that's why I'd like to come."
