Meulensteen still at United

Manchester United first-team coach Rene Meulensteen has distanced himself from reports that he has quit the club amid rumours that new boss David Moyes will install Phil Neville on his coaching staff.

Meulensteen is highly regarded at United but following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant Mike Phelan it has been speculated that he could also head for the exit door. He has been strongly linked with the vacant managerial position at Wigan Athletic following Roberto Martinez's decision to move on after relegation to the Championship.

Neville announced earlier this year that he would leave Everton at the end of his playing contract this month, and he could now be reunited with Moyes once he returns from coaching duties with the England Under-21 squad at the European Championship in Israel.

Everton coaches Jimmy Lumsden and Chris Woods have already moved with Moyes and Neville is also tipped to return to the club he left eight years ago.

Meulensteen is a Dutch coach who, bar a year with Danish side Brondby between 2006 and 2007, has been at United since 2001 first working with the youth team before moving onto the reserves and taking on duties as first-team coach in 2007. But his comments will not instil confidence that he will remain at the club next season.

Meulensteen was quoted as saying by Dutch magazine ELF Voetbal: "So far I will report on July 1. I am still under contract at the club. I didn't step down, and also I was not sacked by Manchester United. I am still employed."
