Wilkins backs Jose, Roman partnership

Ray Wilkins has backed Jose Mourinho to work in harmony with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, after it was confirmed the combustible duo have been reunited at Stamford Bridge.

Rigg: No tearful farewell for Mourinho

Former Chelsea player and assistant manager Wilkins persistently stated his belief that Mourinho would not return to the club after his fall-out with Abramovich led to his first spell as manager coming to a tempestuous end in 2007.

Yet Wilkins now believes the pair must have patched up their differences, after Abramovich handed the coach he paid a reported £18 million in compensation six years ago a lucrative new four-year contract.

"You fall out with people and you make it up and I would assume Jose and Mr Abramovich have spoken on numerous occasions to sort out their differences and have come to a very happy ending," Wilkins told Sky Sports.

"Mr Abramovich wanted to do things one way and Jose wanted to do another. It was a matter of principle, but that is in the past.

"Abramovich wants to win at the end of the day and that is what Mourinho does. Mourinho's main aim will be to wrestle back the Premier League.

"Finishing third or fourth is no good to Chelsea. They need to be finishing up there and fighting for the Premier League.

"I know the Champions League is a great trophy but the best trophy you can win is your domestic trophy. That shows consistency and a level of performance over 38 games. Anything else becomes a bit of a bonus."

Wilkins believes Mourinho's return to Chelsea is the ideal tonic for the Premier League, as it looks to reshape its image following the retirement of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Having lost Sir Alex Ferguson from our game, it's nice that we've got another fantastic personality coming back," he added. "It's good for Chelsea and the Premier League as well.

"The people at Chelsea absolutely adore the guy and the supporters love him to bits. He wants to be loved, so we read, and he's going back to the best place for him.

"I'm sure that with the players that they bought last year - now they've got another year's experience in the Premier League - that Chelsea will be one of the top teams once again next year."

Mourinho will be presented to the media at what will be an eagerly anticipated Stamford Bridge press conference next Monday, nine years after he proclaimed himself to be the Special One at his first unveiling as Chelsea manager.
