Mourinho completes Chelsea return

Chelsea have confirmed Jose Mourinho's return to the club with the former Real Madrid boss agreeing a four-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

• Lythell: Jose motivated by title
• Vilarrubi: Jose will be 'disaster'

Mourinho's appointment was expected after the Portuguese announced he was poised to re-join the side he left in 2007, as he said the admiration Blues fans have for him made the decision easier.

The Portuguese first took over at the Blues in 2004 after leaving Porto and went on to win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two League Cups.

He left the club before joining Inter Milan, where he lifted the Champions League trophy as part of a famous Treble in 2010, before heading to Madrid.

With Real, Mourinho guided the club to the Liga title a year ago but he was unable to defend their crown last season as Barcelona claimed glory.

Ultimately a failure to guide Madrid to their tenth European Cup, coupled with a strained relationship with Spanish media and football authorities, tempered the former Porto manager's Copa del Rey and league triumphs, leading to a premature end to his time at the Bernabeu.

Speculation has been strong that Mourinho was set for a return to Chelsea, and the club have now confirmed the news ahead of a press conference on Monday.

Chief executive Ron Gourlay told the club's official website: "I am delighted to welcome Jose back to Chelsea. His continued success, drive and ambition made him the outstanding candidate.

"It is our aim to keep the club moving forward to achieve greater success in the future and Jose is our number one choice as we believe he is the right manager to do just that.

"He was and remains a hugely popular figure at the club and everyone here looks forward to working with him again."

Back at Chelsea, Mourinho's primary task is to wrest the Premier League title back for Chelsea after three years of Manchester dominance from United and City, while he will undoubtedly be targeting the Champions League glory that eluded him first time round.

He will be able to call on several players from his first reign, with John Terry, Frank Lampard, Petr Cech and Michael Essien still at the club having previously starred under Mourinho.
