Valverde leaves Valencia

Ernesto Valverde has resigned from his role as coach of Valencia.

• Hunter: La Liga review
• Corrigan: Best La Liga XI
• Sociedad reach UCL

Valverde announced his decision following Los Che's 4-3 loss at Sevilla on Saturday - a result which meant the side finished fifth in La Liga and failed to secure Champions League football for next season.

The 49-year-old said that he had made his mind up about quitting some time ago, but wanted to keep it quiet until the end of the campaign in order to "maintain the competitive spirit of the team".

It is believed the club's precarious financial position may have played a part in Valverde deciding to move on.

The Spaniard, who has also had spells at Athletic Bilbao, Espanyol, Olympiakos and Villarreal, arrived at the Mestalla in December on a six-month contract.

Former Valencia player Miroslav Djukic, who coached Real Valladolid for the last time on Saturday, has been touted as Valverde's successor.
