Panathinaikos win Super League appeal

Panathinaikos have won their appeal against a decision to expel them from the Super League next season.

The Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) reviewed the licences of Greece's 16 top-flight clubs last week, approving eight initial applications but turning down the other eight.

Panathinaikos, PAS Giannina and Panthrakikos won their appeals against those rejections, the EPO said.

"The appeal body of the Hellenic Football Federations Licensing Committee ... has accepted and grants permission for all three clubs to participate competitively in the 2013-2014 season," an EPO statement said.

OFI Crete, Aris Salonica and Panionios are still awaiting verdicts on their appeals.

Olympiakos Piraues, PAOK Salonica, Asteras Tripolis, Veria, Skoda Xanthi, Atromitos Athinon, Levadiakos and Platanias were all awarded licences.

Panathinaikos failed to qualify for Europe for the first time since 1997 in what was a difficult first season under the ownership of the Panathinaikos Alliance fans' group.

The club sold players including Greece internationals Kostas Katsouranis, Lazaros Christodoulopoulos and Loukas Vintra in an attempt to ease a challenging financial situation.
