Debuchy vows to improve

Mathieu Debuchy is looking to put the problems of his early months with Newcastle United behind him and show his true quality next season.

• Debuchy relishing challenge

Debuchy, 27, had been targeted by Newcastle last summer but did not make the switch until January, when a £5.5 million fee was agreed with Lille.

Although he made a good start to life on Tyneside, winning three of his opening six Premier League games, his form dipped as the club were drawn into the relegation battle, and his red card in the 6-0 defeat at home to Liverpool represented a particular low point.

He hopes that, after a full pre-season with the club, he will be able to show his best form.

"I feel great being in Newcastle in terms of my life," he told the Evening Chronicle. "I've been made welcome by everyone at the club, particularly the supporters, even if the results had not been as we would have wanted.

"However, I want to be stronger and play better for Newcastle next season. I will be better equipped to do that when we return. I'll go away this summer, rest up and prepare hard for next season, because on a personal level I want to give more to my team. Hopefully the team as a whole will improve."
