Betis star Castro charged with assault

Real Betis striker Ruben Castro has been charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend in Seville on Sunday night.

The incident is reported to have taken place on the Avenida de la Palmera near the Betis' Estadio Benito Villamarin, hours after the Verdiblancos' 4-0 La Liga victory over Real Zaragoza.

Andalucian paper Estadio Deportivo reported that the Canary Islander was in court on Tuesday to hear charges of "causing injury" and "sexual aggression".

He denied the charges and has been released on bail, and ordered to stay at least 300 metres from the woman involved.

Castro's legal representative Jose Antonio Bosch, who is also a Betis executive, said he was "confident" his client would be cleared.

"A case has begun, but have total certainty that he is innocent, but we cannot give details," Bosch said. "He can play, he can go home, the only thing he cannot do is talk in public because his lawyers have forbidden him to do that.

"I see him annoyed, as someone who has been unjustly accused of a crime. We are confident this will end in nothing, because we believe in the assumption of innocence."

With 18 Primera Division goals this season Castro, 31, is Betis' top scorer, and some pundits had suggested he deserved a call up to Spain's Confederations Cup squad.

Pepe Mel's side are currently seventh in the Primera Division, and may need a point at Levante in Saturday's final game of the season to secure a Europa League qualification spot.
