Dortmund sign Papastathopoulos

Borussia Dortmund have announced the signing of versatile Werder Bremen defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

The Greece international, 24, has signed a five-year deal with the Champions League runners-up for a speculated transfer fee of €8 millon plus €2 million add-ons.

“We are delighted that Sokratis has decided for Borussia Dortmund. He is a versatile defender, in whom we see a lot of potential,” Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said.

Papastathopoulos added: “I had two years at Werder from which I personally profited very much. It is a shame that in a sporting sense things did not turn out the way we all wished for.”

Sokratis thanked his old club and said that they will always remain in his heart, adding that “it was time to make the next step.” Werder Bremen general manager Thomas Eichin thanked Sokratis for “doing a good job over the past two years” and wished him all the best for his future career.

“It is part of the Werder philosophy to consider what is best for both sides when receiving an offer,” he said.  “In this case the conditions were right for all parties involved.”

Sokratis has played 59 Bundesliga games for Werder and scored two goals. He is likely to deputise as right-back for Poland international Lukasz Piszczek, who has been ruled out for the rest of the year with a hip surgery. He can also play at centre-back.
