Roof collapses at Confed Cup stadium

Part of the roof of a stadium in Brazil which will host matches in next month's Confederations Cup and next summer's World Cup finals has collapsed.

Heavy rain overnight in the north-eastern city of Salvador led to a small part of the roof at the Arena Fonte Nova to be collapse. There were no immediate reports of anyone being injured.

The 56,000-seater stadium, which was inaugurated in April, is scheduled to host three matches during next month's tournament - the Group A match between Brazil and Italy on June 22, the Group B fixture between Nigeria and Uruguay two days earlier and the third-place play-off on June 30, the same day as the final.

Six 2014 World Cup matches are set to be staged at the Fonte Nova, including one of the quarter-finals.

Earlier on Monday, Brazil's president Dilma Rousseff had praised the nation's preparations for the tournament, despite several deadlines, inspections and text events having to be put back or cancelled over the last few months.

"I'm certain that Brazil will shine on and off the field," Rousseff said on her weekly radio broadcast. "I travelled across the country to inaugurate the six Confederations Cup stadiums... and was impressed with the beauty and the modernity of these new football stages."
