Coppa Italia trouble leads to nine arrests

Nine supporters have been arrested following violent clashes in the aftermath of Lazio's 1-0 Coppa Italia final win against fierce rivals Roma on Sunday.

Senad Lulic's strike was the difference on the night at the Stadio Olimpico, as Lazio wrapped up their sixth Coppa win and qualification into next season's Europa League.

However, the final was marred by the trouble near Rome's Colosseum, with police having to step in when opposing supporters clashed, leaving cars and bars in the area damaged.

A number of the Giallorossi's ultra fans made their way to their club's training ground on the outskirts of the city, before throwing eggs and rocks at the bus carrying the team's players upon their return from the game.

Outside the stadium itself, journalists from the Mediaset TV network were attacked and had their equipment robbed.

There was also trouble before the game, with police having to confiscate a large number of dangerous weapons from ultras under the Ponte della Musica. Garden tools, kitchen knives, axes and ice picks, all taped to sticks for maximum stabbing reach, were found by officers.

The trouble followed on from Daniele De Rossi's plea for calm to fans just days earlier.

He said: "It will be a big party. There are lots of people who want to come to the stadium hoping to celebrate a win but who will leave their weapons and knives at home."

The last meeting between the two neighbours, in April, was also marred by violent clashes in the streets of Rome, with several people stabbed.
