Fortuna Dusseldorf have sacked coach Norbert Meier following their relegation into Bundesliga II, the club announced on Monday.
Meier's side finished the season in 17th position in the Bundesliga table, three points adrift of safety.
Dusselfdorf's poor record in the second half of the campaign was ultimately their downfall as they picked up just nine points.
During the build-up to the final game of the season, in which the club still had a chance of survival, rumours of the coach's sacking had already began to spread.
However, it took the club over a week to decide on the fate of Meier, who had taken the team from the third tier into the Bundesliga.
In a statement released on Monday, Dusselfdorf confirmed the departure, following "lengthy analysis of the recent past and in-depth discussion". The statement added that Meier's exit was "by mutual agreement".
