Martinez set to decide future on Tuesday

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan is expecting to resolve manager Roberto Martinez's future at a lunchtime meeting on Tuesday.

Martinez is a leading candidate for the job at Everton, which has become vacant following David Moyes' decision to leave for Manchester United.

Whelan is keen to keep hold of the manager who guided Wigan to the FA Cup for the first time in their history as they beat Manchester City 1-0 at Wembley on May 11.

But Martinez was unable to keep Wigan in the Premier League, and must decide whether he is best served by remaining with the club in the Championship next season. He is spending the weekend in his native Spain considering his next move.

Whelan told the Mail on Sunday: "I am due to meet Roberto for lunch on Tuesday and we'll announce what is happening after that. I can't offer him Premier League football but we are still a club in a strong position to go for promotion next season. I'll tell him we can keep any player he wants to."

Everton have yet to make an approach for Martinez, with chairman Bill Kenwright considering a number of options, including internal candidates David Weir and Alan Stubbs, both on the Goodison Park coaching staff, and former captain Phil Neville, who has just ended an eight-year playing stint at the club.
