Clarke not expecting spending spree

Steve Clarke has said West Bromwich Albion will not be splashing the cash in the transfer market this summer.

Steve Clarke is hoping to strengthen his side in the summer
West Brom are unlikely to make major moves in the transfer market this summer

- McAuley aiming higher next season

Finishing eighth in the Premier League this season earned Albion £48.3 million, but chairman Jeremy Peace will not sanction heavy spending, despite Clarke's ambition to push for a Europa League spot next season.

Albion's record transfer fee is the £6 million paid for Shane Long and Clarke would be surprised to see that broken this summer, saying in the Birmingham Mail: "The club will continue to operate in the same way as it has over the past few years.

"The strategy will be similar to before which will probably be one big signing. We know the amount of players that the chairman likes to have in the squad so we will work on sticking to that and, like at most clubs, there will be three or four coming in and about the same going out."

Albion have made signing a new striker a priority this summer, with Peter Odemwingie set to leave and doubts persisting over the long-term future of Markus Rosenberg, while the chances of Romelu Lukaku returning on loan are receding.

Clarke and sporting and technical director Richard Garlick have been putting together a list of possible replacements and Wilfried Bony is one name believed to be on the agenda.

The Vitesse Arnhem striker has been cleared to leave this summer and Albion, Fulham, West Ham United and Newcastle United have all checked on the Ivory Coast international.

His club will demand £10 million for the striker who hit 31 goals last season in the Eredivisie this season, which may put him beyond West Brom’s reach.
