Gill 'confident' of Rooney stay

Outgoing Manchester United chief executive David Gill has told Sky Sports he is "confident" that Wayne Rooney will still be at the club next season.

Rooney’s future has long been up for discussion, with departing manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealing that the striker asked to move away from Old Trafford for the second time earlier this month.

The England international has been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League, while Paris Saint-Germain are believed to be keen on a deal, and Rooney himself is reportedly open to a move to France.

David Moyes’ first big decision as United manager will be sorting out the future of Rooney, who he fell out with during his time at Everton.

However, according to Gill, who is leaving the club on June 30, Moyes will have a relatively easy task in persuading the player to stay at Old Trafford.

"I'm confident he will be there next season," Gill told Sky Sports.

Rooney endured a frustrating 2012-13 campaign at times with Robin van Persie’s arrival meaning the Netherlands international often stole most of the limelight. The former Everton man found himself dropped on occasions, including for the Champions League last-16 second-leg clash against Real Madrid.
