Madrid never wanted me, says Coentrao

Fabio Coentrao has said he is open to leaving Real Madrid in the summer - because he has never felt accepted at the La Liga club.

Portugal international Coentrao, who joined for €30 million from Benfica in the summer of 2011, has failed to win over many fans or pundits during his two seasons at the Bernabeu, with some feeling he did not deserve the backing shown by his coach and fellow Portuguese, Jose Mourinho.

With Mourinho’s departure now confirmed, the full-back’s future has become the subject of speculation.

Premier League Tottenham would apparently like to include him in part-exchange in any deal for Gareth Bale, while Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly raised his name during talks about coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Portugal international Coentrao, 25, whose contract at Madrid runs until 2017, told O Jogo it appeared he was being forced out of the club.

“From the first day I arrived, it seemed they did not want me here,” he said. “Now it seems that everyone wants me to leave the club.

“I do not know what I have done wrong. A solution must be found which is good for the club and for me, so that nobody loses out.”

An €18 million transfer to Chelsea, which could see him link up again with Mourinho in London, has also been mooted in the Spanish media.

Asked about this possibility, Coentrao did not rule it out. “If I do leave Real Madrid I will not close the door to anyone,” he explained.
