Kidd lauds City after friendly comeback

Manchester City caretaker manager Brian Kidd has praised his side's resilience after they clawed back from three goals down to stun Chelsea 4-3 in a friendly in St Louis.

An early Demba Ba goal and Cesar Azpilicueta's penalty gave Chelsea a comfortable 2-0 lead in front of a sellout Busch Stadium and Oscar's goal in the 52nd minute appeared to put the match beyond doubt for Rafa Benitez's men.

City were soon rewarded for their dominance in the match when Javi Garcia struck in the 62nd minute and an Edin Dzeko brace pulled the sides level with just five minutes remaining.

Defender Micah Richards latched onto the end of a Garcia header in stoppage time to seal the win and Kidd insists it was no less than City deserved after a difficult end to the domestic season.

"I thought we were unlucky to go in 2-0 down but the players were tremendous," he said. "They have had a tough couple of weeks after losing the manager and the FA Cup final. It has been a draining, emotional couple of weeks.

"They have done great work in New York with the appearances and events for the club, they have done great work. We only had one training session, so that might be the secret. You can't say enough about them."

City and Chelsea will go head to head again on Saturday with another friendly scheduled at Yankee Stadium in New York and Kidd, who played for Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale, believes the 48,000-strong crowd were witness to a great advertisement for football in America.

"I played in the NASL (North American Soccer League) and if you see games like that it does give soccer a great name," Kidd added. "They love high-scoring games, everything is based on that in America. To have a game like that, right at the death, it is the excitement they crave."
