First Division clubs to revisit "SPL2"

First Division clubs are set to break away from the Scottish Football League to create a second tier of the Scottish Premier League after the SFL clubs were split on merger plans at their annual general meeting.

• First Division clubs propose "SPL2"

The ten clubs will re-visit their application to join the SPL after only 16 of the 30 clubs backed reconstruction plans put forward by the top flight.

The SFL has planned a formal vote on the matter on June 10 but six more clubs would need to back the plans to make them a reality in time for next season.

Thirteen clubs were against the plans. Rangers do not get a vote as they are associate members having joined last summer.

Speaking on behalf of the First Division clubs, who had a meeting of their own after the AGM, Hamilton chairman Les Gray said: "The whole group is disappointed that the outcome of the meeting resulted in a 16-13 vote.

"Everybody has worked incredibly hard to get it over the line but it has not been enough and nearly half of the SFL clubs have decided it is not for them. The next step for us is to take a few days to mull over it and look at all the other alternatives - you know what they are.

"We will do what is right for our clubs."
