Juventus in doping allegations - report

Dutch TV channel NOS will this weekend screen a documentary in which it is claimed Juventus' 1996 Champions League-winning side had been given performance-enhancing drugs.

The programme will be aired at 22:15 CET by NOS, a public broadcaster in the Netherlands, on Sunday and contains testimony from two Italian scientists, Giuseppe d'Onofrio and Alessandro Donati, who state the Juve players had been "prepared with EPO" for their penalty shoot-out victory over Ajax in Rome.

The pair drew their conclusions having had access to medical documents seized during police raids on Juventus club offices in 1998. The files contained the results of the analyses of blood samples provided by the Turin club's players.

D'Onofrio testified as an expert witness in the trial of former Juventus team doctor Riccardo Agricola, stating at the time analyses of samples provided by the Juve squad indicated "the almost certain use of pharmaceutical manipulations, such as EPO or blood transfusions."

After initially being sentenced to 22 months in prison in 2004 for sporting fraud and the administration of medicines dangerous to health, among them the blood-booster EPO, between 1994 and 1998, Agricola was acquitted of doping and acquitted on the Sporting Fraud charge as the statute of limitations had expired.
