Gignac staying with Marseille

Andre-Pierre Gignac has pledged his future to Marseille after enjoying his 'best season yet' with his boyhood idols.

Andre-Pierre Gignac has made 16 appearances for France and scored four goals

In his first two seasons with the team he supported as a child, Gignac, 27, struggled to justify the estimated €16-18 million OM paid Toulouse to bring him to the Stade Velodrome in 2010, scoring just nine goals in 51 Ligue 1 appearances. However, after the departure of Didier Deschamps last summer, Gignac has come close to recapturing the form which saw him finish the French top flight's leading scorer in 2008-09.

"I don't see why I would leave, and where I could find better than here in France. I'm sure that the club are going to make the necessary effort to finish on the podium next season. But today I feel very good in the club of my heart," Gignac, who has contributed 13 goals in 30 league outings this season, is reported as telling the press in L'Equipe. "It's the best since Toulouse. I've clearly made amends for last year. I've gained a lot in maturity, and I've started to vary my game more."

Under contract until 2015, Gignac's immediate future lies with OM, and the France international believes team-mate Mathieu Valbuena, 28, will also be lining up alongside him for the 2013-14 campaign.

"I think he'll stay because he's been here a long time, he's playing well, and because the World Cup is coming up and things are going well for him with the French team and OM," said Gignac, who was much less certain about the whereabouts of centre-back Nicolas Nkoulou, 23, next season. "I would like him to stay with us, but I think he hopes to go to a big European club, and he deserves it."
