Santa Fe edge towards semi-finals

Colombian side Santa Fe have one foot in the Copa Libertadores semi-finals after a comprehensive victory over Real Garcilaso.

Colombian side Santa Fe took a big step towards the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores by beating tournament debutants Real Garcilaso 3-1 in Peru in the first leg of their last-eight clash.

Santa Fe showed no ill effects from playing at 3,600 metres above sea level in Cusco as Francisco Meza put them ahead in the 21st minute with a left-foot volley and Wilder Medina doubled the advantage three minutes later.

Garcilaso midfielder Fabio Ramos missed a penalty in the 26th and Jefferson Cuero made him pay by making it 3-0 eight minutes after the interval.

Garcilaso forward Alfredo Ramua reduced the deficit with a long-distance strike in the 63rd minute to at least give them a glimmer of hope for next Tuesday's second leg in Colombia.

Meanwhile in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian champions Fluminense played out a goalless draw with Paraguayan side Olimpia.

Fluminense had some decent opportunities but Olimpia keeper Martin Silva was on form.

Olimpia midfielder Eduardo Aranda saw red eight minutes from time but Fluminense failed to take advantage.

Fluminense striker Fred said: "This is not what we expected, but we have an advantage having not conceded. Unfortunately, we failed to score the necessary goals to win tonight. We failed on finishing."

The two teams meet in Asuncion next Wednesday for the second leg.
