Chelsea trio to leave U.S. tour early

Frank Lampard, Gary Cahill and Ashley Cole will depart Chelsea's tour of the United States on Friday in order to join up with England for international duty.

• Lythell: Wave Benitez goodbye

The trio will be involved in Thursday's friendly game against Manchester City in St Louis before returning to London to prepare for England's games against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil. They will miss the second game against City which takes place on Saturday in New York.

"We will train for the next couple of days and will be involved in the game on Thursday and then fly back on Friday," Cahill told the club's official website.

After an extended season saw Chelsea complete 69 games Cahill was happy to finish third in the Premier League and win the Europa League.

He added: "I think you have to say we finished strongly. We got the third position we were aiming for and achieved what we wanted there, and we finished with a trophy.

"We had ups and downs but like last year we finished well and we can be pleased. You've got to judge it by where you are in the league at certain stages.

"At three quarters of the way we were looking for third and we managed to achieve that. After we went out of the FA Cup we had one trophy left and it was important to pick up some silverware."
