Nigeria confirm Moses absent for Brazil

Nigeria forward Victor Moses will miss this summer's Confederations Cup through injury, while his Chelsea team-mate John Obi Mikel has asked to be rested for an upcoming international friendly against Mexico.

• Moonda: Nigeria's new nightmare

Moses, 22, starred for the Super Eagles as they won the African Nations Cup in February but will not feature at this summer's Confederations Cup in Brazil as he needs treatment on recurring hamstring and ankle injuries.

He will also miss crucial World Cup qualifiers against Kenya on June 5 and Namibia on June 12.

The former Wigan star's absence leaves Nigeria worryingly short in attack, with African Nations Cup Golden Boot winner Emmanuel Emenike and Kasimpasa striker Kalu Uche - second on the Turkish Super Lig's goalscoring charts this season - also sidelined through injury.

Super Eagles boss Stephen Keshi will, however, be able to call on experienced Chelsea midfielder Mikel, who has requested a break from international duty for a friendly against Mexico next week but will be available for the World Cup qualifiers and Confederations Cup.

Both Moses and Mikel are in Chelsea's travelling party for post-season friendlies against Manchester City in the United States.
