Dickov appointed Doncaster boss

Paul Dickov has been named Doncaster's new boss, with the Welshman signing on a one-year rolling contract at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Dickov, 40, left Oldham in February and will take over Brian Flynn's position after Flynn was promoted from caretaker manager to a permanent position for the latter half of Doncaster's League One title-winning campaign.

The former Scotland international is confident Rovers will be able to compete in the Championship and can back up their dominant season.

"It's a challenge but a challenge I am going to embrace," Dickov said. "I am a very positive person and without setting any specific targets we will go into next season with momentum and a lot of confidence to do really well.

"I don't think we can put a ceiling on what we can achieve. It's a fantastic club with fantastic people, it's stable and that is something that I have been striving for. I could say that our aim is to stay in the division but I think that sends out a negative vibe straight away.

"You have got to set your bar high and you never know what you can achieve. Yes, we are going to have to get players with a real good quality, but the feel-good factor is already there."

Former Blackpool and Blackburn manager Michael Appleton had been tipped to land the Doncaster role, but Dickov insists he is the right man for the job despite a difficult tenure at Oldham

"For me it is exciting," he added. "This is something I feel ready for, I had two and a half years at Oldham which was fantastic for me, working to a strict budget and without a lot of resources. The stuff you learn from that is invaluable, I feel am I ready for this challenge."

It is believed Doncaster adopted a rigorous process to appoint their new manager and Rovers chairman John Ryan believes those high standards resulted in the best man being selected.

"We have had a very arduous process to find our new manager," he said. "We have gone through this process which has been finalised today and we have unanimously decided on a young, aggressive person who manages like he played.

"We knew it was a critical appointment having just got back into the Championship. We wanted someone who could take us on from where we are now and we were very impressed with Paul with the way he played against us for Oldham three times last season.

"We feel he has all the credentials to become a fantastic manager in years to come. He is very organised, very hard-working, very enthusiastic and although there was some very stiff competition he came out top, in a 14-point criteria and also in the interviews.

"We have done all we can to acquire the best manager we can for Doncaster. There was intense competition and Doncaster Rovers is now a coveted job whereas 20 years ago it maybe wasn't."
