Rodwell called up to England squad

Manchester City's Jack Rodwell has earned a call-up to the England squad for upcoming friendlies against Republic of Ireland and Brazil.

• Roy hits out at club friendlies

Rodwell, 22, endured an injury-hit debut season at the Etihad Stadium after joining City from Everton last summer.

However he returned to the first-team fold towards the end of the campaign, featuring in four of City's last five games and scoring two goals in Sunday's final-day defeat to Norwich City.

The midfielder made his international debut in a 1-0 friendly victory over Spain in October 2011 but has appeared just once more for the Three Lions since then.

Rodwell has played for his country at every level from Under-16s right through to the senior team and played for the Under-21s at the 2009 European Championship.

It is believed that Rodwell will replace Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley in Roy Hodgson's squad, though he has not officially pulled out yet.

Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick and Rodwell's club-mate James Milner are the other central midfield options for England.
