Diego talks up Atletico move

Wolfsburg midfielder Diego has revealed that he could return to Atletico Madrid during the summer.

Diego is caught in the middle of a tug of war between the two clubs

Diego, 28, spent the 2011-2012 season on loan at Atletico, helping the club to the Europa League during his stay.

Spanish media reported in April that the Brazil international was set for a return to the La Liga side, quoting the player himself as saying that he “was fed up [with] losing” at Wolfsburg, and that Atletico “is always in his heart”.

The Bundesliga club, however, swept aside those rumours, stating that they wanted to build their team for next season around the former Juventus man.

But following Wolfsburg's 2-2 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, Diego hinted that a move could still be possible.

“Atletico want me and they have made me an offer," he said. "We now need to talk to Wolfsburg about what is best for me and the club.”

With the midfielder’s contract set to expire in 2014, this summer could represent the last opportunity for Wolfsburg to cash in on the player.

Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking seemed to suggest otherwise, though, saying: “If you have seen him play, it comes as no surprise that clubs make offers for him. Out of respect for Diego we will listen to every offer and talk to him, but I don’t think we will sell him.”

Hecking did concede, however, that every player, including Diego, has his price.

“If an offer is too good to turn down [we would accept],” he said.

The club’s general manager, Klaus Allofs, echoed Hecking’s words, saying: “If he has the desire to leave the club we need to talk with Diego. We need to find arguments that make him stay. I cannot imagine there is a club offering enough money for him.”
