Milan book Champions League place

AC Milan secured a dramatic 2-1 win at Siena to claim the final Champions League place on the last day of the Serie A season.

• Sat: Samp do double
• Paul: Milan's dramatic late show

With Fiorentina beating Pescara the pressure was on Massimiliano Allegri's men and they were out of the top three when Claudio Terzi gave Siena the lead in the 25th minute.

Milan captain Massimo Ambrosini and Siena's Christian Terlizzi were then both sent off for second bookable offences in the space of two minutes before Mario Balotelli and Philippe Mexes netted to hand Milan the win.

Fiorentina thrashed relegated Pescara 5-1 only to suffer late heartache at the Stadio Adriatico as the win proved futile in their bid to reach the Champions League.

Vincenzo Montella's side saw off their relegated hosts with ease thanks to a hat-trick from Adem Ljajic and goals from Steven Jovetic and Matias Fernandez.

Marco Vittiglio scored a consolation for the hosts, but there was no consoling Fiorentina at the final whistle as they discovered their efforts had been in vain.

Udinese made no mistake in tying down the final automatic Europa League place by condemning Inter Milan to a heavy 5-2 defeat at the end of a miserable season at the San Siro.

There was no prospect of continental competition for the Azzurri, who limped over the line to finish ninth, but Udinese knew victory would bar Lazio from snatching fifth place.

Quickfire goals from Giampiero Pinzi and Maurizio Domizzi proved the visitors' intent with Antonio Di Natale, Gabriel Silva and Luis Muriel later rendering efforts from Juan Jesus and Tommaso Rocchi mere consolations.

The coming days promise to reveal more about Inter boss Andrea Stramaccioni's future as president Massimo Moratti plots significant renovations before next season.

Lazio must pursue Europa League football through the Coppa Italia final after a 1-0 defeat at Cagliari condemned the capital club to seventh place.

Daniele Dessena claimed all three points for Cagliari with a late header. Lazio now face Roma in the first-ever Rome derby final on May 26, with triumph promising the triple reward of a trophy, the bragging rights, and the chance to compete on the continent in the autumn.

Homeless Cagliari, meanwhile, ended their campaign at Trieste's Stadio Nereo Rocco but finished within touching distance of 10th-placed Parma at the end of an impressive season on the pitch.

Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri lost 2-1 to the club who could well offer him his next challenge in management as Roma beat the league's second-best team on the last day of the season.

Mazzarri has promised to reveal where his future lies in the hours following this season-ending clash at the Stadio Olimpico, which was settled by second-half goals from Marquinho and Mattia Destro.

Roma, who could replace interim boss Aurelio Andreazzoli with Mazzarri in the coming days, rode out an open game to tie down sixth place after Edinson Cavani struck late on. Much like his manager, the Uruguayan is expected to move on at the end of a campaign which has seen the Azzurri finish second for the first time since 1990.

Torino and Catania ended their campaigns with an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Stadio Olimpico.

Sergio Almiron gave the visitors the lead in the first half but Alessio Cerci levelled things up after the break. Gonzalo Bergessio put the visitors back ahead but Rolando Bianchi netted seven minutes from time to snatch a share of the points.

A late goal from Cyril Thereau denied Atalanta a winning end to the season as Chievo took home a point from a 2-2 draw at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia.

Atalanta led twice with Guglielmo Stendardo first to put them ahead in the eighth minute before Thereau levelled in the 76th. Luigi Giorgi restored Atalanta's lead six minutes from time only for Thereau to level with almost the last kick of the game.

Bologna and Genoa shared the points but failed to score any goals in a 0-0 draw at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara.

There were plenty of chances in the first half with the home team hitting the woodwork, but the action slowly ebbed away with both sides happy enough to take a point on the final day of the season.

Both clubs end their campaigns in the bottom half of the table, a little too close to the bottom three than they would have expected or hoped to be nine months ago.

Palermo suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Parma in their final outing in Italy's top flight ahead of their relegation to Serie B.

Massimo Gobbi, Jaime Valdes and Ishak Belfodil piled the misery on the Sicilians at the end of a season to forget. Fabrizio Miccoli netted a consolation in what was probably his last appearance for the Rosaneri.

The result left Palermo six points adrift of Genoa in the relegation zone while Parma finished in the top half of the table.
