Heynckes farewells the Bundesliga

Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes has bid an emotional farewell to the Bundesliga as his team ran out 4-3 winners over Borussia Monchengladbach.

• Blog: Heynckes leaves the Bundesliga in triumphant fashion

Heynckes, who will vacate his position for the incoming Pep Guardiola in the summer, brought his team to an old haunt, in the form of Monchengladbach, on the final day of the German season.

But the Bavarian giants did not give their manager an easy ride in his final domestic game in charge, coming back from an early 2-0 defecit to edge a seven goal thriller.

But from a crowd that once adored him as a player and manager, Heynckes was farwelled with a rapturous ovation which left him struggling to keep his emotions in check after the game.

"It was a very moving moment for me," Heynckes told Bayern Munich's official website fcbayern.telekom.de. "I started out here as a player and as a coach.

"It would certainly have been even more emotional if it had been at [Borussia's former home ground] the Bökelberg. That's the place I associate with many triumphs, many highlights, but also bitter defeats and odd events.

"I want to thank the fans and spectators here for the wonderful farewell, because ... it shows me, this is my home."

However, the support Heynckes recieved off the field was matched by the action in the match, with the 68-year-old believing his team were playing for him.

"The first 10 or 15 minutes didn't go according to plan. We were taken by surprise," he said. "I joked with my assistant Peter Hermann that I had the feeling my players were still at the title party.

"We weren't well organised and our passing was poor. I had to correct a few things at half-time. In the second half, we played more like we have done all season. It was an interesting and spectacular match.

"I sensed my players were playing for me. They were delighted they were able to give me this gift."

And with the Champions League final against rivals Borussia Dortmund edging closer and closer, Heynckes said his squad could be forgiven for not focusing all their attention on Monchengladbach.

"As we've seen from the result in Dortmund [Dortmund lost 2-1], you can't rule out the players being preoccupied with the final," Heynckes said.

"So I have a lot of sympathy with my lads. Everything's focused on the final. It was important to win today and maintain our rhythm and our confidence.

"Gladbach pushed us, they have good tactics, good transitions, and they're good at pressing. They were very good opponents prior to Wembley."
