Wenger: No enquiries for Rooney

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has dismissed speculation that the club have been in contact with Manchester United about wantaway striker Wayne Rooney.

The Gunners have this week been linked with a move for Rooney, who recently handed in a transfer request at Old Trafford. But Wenger insists he has made no enquiries about the England international.

“At the moment we have no interest in anybody. We have only one interest, which is of course Sunday’s game,” Wenger said on Friday.

“I don’t know if Man United will sell Rooney and that is the best sign to show you we have not made any approach for him because the first move is to contact Manchester United, which we did not do. At the moment we are focused on Sunday.”

It is the second time that Rooney, who has scored 197 goals in 402 games for United since arriving at the club in 2004, has asked for a transfer request in the past two-and-a-half years.

In October 2010, the former Everton forward released a statement questioning United’s ambition and outlining his desire to leave Old Trafford, before making a dramatic U-turn and instead signed a new contract 48 hours later.

This season, though, Rooney has become increasingly frustrated at playing second fiddle to Robin van Persie and has made it clear he wishes to continue his career away from United, with Chelsea and PSG believed to be his most likely destination.
