Scharner targets Hamburg return

Defender Paul Scharner has said he wants to return to Hamburg after spending half the season on loan at Wigan.

Paul Scharner is eager to create history at Wigan
Scharner won the FA Cup but suffered relegation

Scharner, 33, told the Hamburger Morgenpost he has no plans to extend his stay in England after Wigan, whom he joined in January, won the FA Cup but suffered relegation from the Premier League only days later.

Instead, he wants to win a place in the Hamburg first team, saying: “That’s my strong ambition. This half-year loan [at Wigan] was a chance to gain match practice.

“Hamburg should remain my club - unless the club does not want me any more.”

On Tuesday, Hamburg general manager Frank Arnesen and boss Torsten Fink were at Arsenal to watch him play in Wigan’s 4-1 defeat, and Fink said: “We know Paul wants to stay.”
