Di Canio eyes six signings

Paolo Di Canio has revealed he is hoping to bring six new players to the Stadium of Light this summer.

• Blog: Undeserved salvation, thanks to Arsenal - and PDC

The former Swindon Town manager moved to Wearside in March following the club's decision to part ways with previous manager Martin O'Neill. Tasked with keeping the club in the Premier League, Di Canio achieved his goal when Wigan fell 4-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates on Tuesday.

However his time at the club has not been without difficulties. Having been forced to shuffle his small squad in recent weeks due to injuries and suspensions, Di Canio is keen to bolster the depth of his side to avoid a similar situation occurring next season.

"Yes, that number [six] could be a right, a bit less or a bit more, it depends," he told the Sunderland Echo. "But, approximately, the number is right. We will see. We need more than a few. I don't want to say 'a lot', because you never know what 'a lot' means, but we need to refresh the squad for many reasons. We've had big problems with injuries and having to play many young players.

"I want to play attacking football and if we miss some players in crucial areas of the field. We've missed players. On Sunday, we'll be travelling with four kids, it means we haven't got many players, especially up front."

Already linked with moves for Maritimo defender Valentin Roberge and Lazio's Modibo Diakité, the Italian conceded he has not discussed his plans with owner Ellis Short. Following the dismissal of chief scout Bryan 'Pop' Robson, Di Canio is working with agent and consultant Roberto De Fanti and chief executive Margaret Byrne, to whom he has confirmed his desired transfer targets.

"I have already made it clear what I would like," added Di Canio. "But I want to focus my attention on the next game. It's clear what I would like to happen, to build a team and play football that the fans will enjoy."
