Dorrans set for showdown talks

Steve Clarke will sit down with Graham Dorrans next week to see if the midfielder is keen to remain with West Bromwich Albion.

Graham Dorrans fires West Bromwich Albion into the lead
Graham Dorrans is out of contract in the summer

The Scotland international asked to leave in January amid frustration at limited first-team opportunities and is out of contract this summer.

In the shadow of Sir Alex Ferguson’s final farewell, Sunday’s clash with Manchester United at The Hawthorns could therefore see Dorrans, 26, make a subdued exit from the club.

Clarke, however, believes the player might still consider staying having been used much more regularly since the turn of the year.

“He has played a lot of games in the second half of the season, he has done really well and he’s happy,” Clarke said. “I will talk to all my players at the end of the season and make sure where they are and let them know where I am.

“His situation hasn’t changed. His biggest gripe in the first half of the season was that he didn’t play enough. In the second half of the season, I don’t think he can have that complaint.

“We said in January that if something came along and it was good for him and the club, we would let him leave. But the way it transpired, it would have been very unlikely that he left anyway because losing Zoltan Gera and George Thorne through injury in January more or less made it inevitable that he was staying.”

Dorrans returned to the starting line-up for the 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford in late December and is this summer due to celebrate five years at the club he joined from Livingston during Tony Mowbray’s reign.

He said last month: “My views were that I want to be playing every week and I’ve still got the same views. If I can do that, I’m happy. If not, I’m not happy. I’m just like anybody else.”

The midfielder has also denied that he is keen to move back closer to Scotland and was the subject of a failed £5 million bid from West Ham at the height of his Baggies career.

The latest of his 27 appearances for the club this season came at Manchester City just over a week ago and, like four others previously, was from the substitutes’ bench. He has played exactly 150 times for West Brom in all.
