Arteta injury doubt for top-four decider

Arsene Wenger has admitted Mikel Arteta is a serious doubt for Arsenal's crucial final game of the season at Newcastle due to injury.

• Mangan: Walcott catches eye
• Delaney at the Emirates

The Gunners are locked in a battle with Tottenham for the final Champions League berth and kept themselves ahead of their North London rivals with a 4-1 win over Wigan.

The victory that relegated the Latics came at a cost, as Arteta limped off with an injury that could rule him out of the trip to Newcastle.

"He is not alright," Wenger told the club's official website. "He pulled his calf so that could be a problem for Sunday. We don't know, we have to wait for 24 hours.

"He is a massive doubt for Sunday. He is very important, that is why I don't rule him out at the moment."

Should Arteta not make the trip to Tyneside, Wenger may well throw Jack Wilshere in even though the midfielder has been booked in for an ankle operation.

"Maybe we will have to push Wilshere in [if Arteta is ruled out]," Wenger said. "I don't know."

Wenger's side head to Newcastle, who are now safe, a point ahead of Tottenham and the Gunners chief is confident his side can get the job done.

He added: "I am confident because we have experience, we play for a long time under massive pressure and we have always found the solutions with the problems that we have faced."
