Atletico make Gomez move
Atletico Madrid have made a move to sign Catania attacker Alejandro Papu Gomez, according to the Serie A club’s president.
Gomez, 25, played under Atletico coach Diego Simeone at Catania in 2011 and previously at Argentine side San Lorenzo in 2009 and 2010.
The hard-working forward is under contract at the Sicilian club until June 2015, but talks about a reported €10 million transfer had already begun, Antonino Pulvirenti revealed to AS.
"The negotiations with Atletico Madrid have begun very well," Pulvirenti said. "There are various serious offers, [but] Atletico are close to finalising the transfer."
While Radamel Falcao is thought likely to leave the Estadio Vicente Calderon, perhaps for newly promoted nouveau riche Ligue 1 side Monaco, Atletico are expected to sign a new centre-forward in the summer.
As Gomez is not known as an out-and-out goalscorer [his best season tally to date was 12 in 2008-09], other targets including Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo, Porto’s Jackson Martinez and Galatasaray’s Burak Yilmaz are also reportedly under consideration.
