Casillas will go to Confederations Cup

Spain's World Cup-winning captain Iker Casillas will be selected for June's Confederations Cup in Brazil, but coach Vicente del Bosque says he cannot guarantee the current Real Madrid No. 2 will start every game.

Casillas has not featured for Madrid since breaking a finger in late January, with Jose Mourinho putting his faith in former reserve keeper Diego Lopez even after Los Blancos' club skipper returned to full fitness in late March.

Del Bosque, speaking in Cairo at a symposium organised by the African Football Confederation, said the vastly experienced Casillas, who is 32 on May 20, would travel to South America although he was not necessarily still first choice for his country.

"He will be in Spain's squad for next month's Confederations Cup in Brazil," Del Bosque told AS. "We must respect his career, and his 143 international caps. We will see if he plays, or another colleague, but what is sure is that he will be in the list of 23."

Former Madrid coach Del Bosque said that if Casillas had done something wrong at the Bernabeu he should be forgiven.

"Iker is a son of Real Madrid, a kid who grew up at the club and who did not cost a penny," he said. "If he has committed an error, he must be forgiven like all kids, if it is that he did something wrong."

The veteran manager also appeared to rein back on recent comments that he would step down after the next summer's World Cup finals, adding weight to recent reports that the RFEF [the Spanish FA] is set to offer him a contract extension until Euro 2016 once qualification for Brazil 2014 is assured.

"A year away is not the moment to think about that possibility, but it is clear that after the national team I will not coach anyone else," Del Bosque said. "We will see how things go. After the World Cup, in June or July 2014, we will speak about my future with Spain. There is time and no hurry."

Spain's squad are set for a busy summer, with friendlies against Ireland in New York and against Haiti in Miami scheduled for early June before they travel to Brazil for the Confederations Cup. That tournament will bring group games versus Uruguay, Tahiti and Nigeria as well as potential semi-finals and finals.

This has led to the suggestion that older players who have been dogged by persistent injuries, such as Madrid's Xabi Alonso and Barcelona's Xavi Hernandez, could be excused the trip. But Del Bosque appeared to suggest he had no plans to allow anyone to rest up.

"We will gather together players who have played a very hard season," he said. "We will see how they are. We must get them in the best condition to begin to train."
