Effenberg turns down Bayern role

Stefan Effenberg will not join Bayern Munich's coaching staff next season, Matthias Sammer confirmed on Monday.

• Blog: Danke Jungs, Danke Jupp!

Effenberg, 44, had recently been linked with an appointment as the club's new reserve team coach under incoming head coach Pep Guardiola.

That speculation increased following the news that former Germany international Mehmet Scholl will leave Bayern for a career as a TV pundit or - if Thomas Schaaf steps down, as has been rumoured - to take over as Werder Bremen coach.

Effenberg had also been linked with the role of head coach at Schalke before the Royal Blues extended Jens Keller's deal until 2015 over the weekend.

Bayern general manager Sammer, a former Germany team-mate of Effenberg, revealed that the former Bayern midfielder did not wish to take the reserve coach job.

"I am and have been in contact with Stefan," Sammer told Sport1 on Monday. "During our talks, it emerged that this is not Stefan's aspiration. He cannot envisage himself coaching a reserve side in the fourth tier."

At the weekend, despite a 2-0 victory against TSV Rain am Lech, Bayern's reserve team saw their hopes of winning a place in the promotion play-offs end, with TSV 1860 Munich's second team running away with the Regionalliga Sud title.
