Dynamo's home unbeaten run ends

HOUSTON -- Aurelien Collin scored in the 73rd minute to lift Sporting Kansas City to a 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo on Sunday night.

The loss snapped Houston's record 36-game home unbeaten streak, including 30 straight in MLS play. Houston had not lost at home since a 2-0 defeat against Columbus on June 18, 2011.

"Just a little bit unfortunate," Houston midfielder Brad Davis said. "It's a disappointing way to (see the streak) come to (an end). I know we're going to be asked about the streak or whatever, but that's why they're records. They're hard to get."

Sporting Kansas City head coach Peter Vermes was more concerned about his team earning points than breaking Houston's unbeaten streak.

"I think as a team we battled for everything tonight," Vermes said. "I thought we had a great mentality. I thought the game plan, the guys followed it from front to back. They didn't detour from it. We were very detail-oriented on the field.

"With as many changes that were made over the course of the game for both teams, I thought that we responded well and anticipated things that may happen in the game, and the guys were locked in to those moments. From that perspective, it was good getting the result, and always on the road, it is very good if you can get the win."

Collin's goal gave Sporting Kansas City (6-4-2) its second win in five games. From eight yards out, Collin headed Seth Sinovic's throw-in toward the goal and Houston's Corey Ashe headed the ball down over the goal line.

Vermes gave credit to his players for the set piece, especially Collin for being courageous to get into a pack of at least five Dynamo players.

"When we throw in, they were very physical against us," Collin said. "We have been just as physical. We scored on the set piece. We are very happy. They were very good defensively, but we were better tonight."

Houston (6-3-2), which saw its five-game unbeaten streak end, nearly tied it in the 80th minute as Jason Johnson headed a bouncer inside the far post off a corner kick, but Paulo Nagamura cleared it off the end line.

Ricardo Clark had an opportunity for the equalizer a minute later, but his header from inside the upper box was saved by diving KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen. Houston's Andrew Driver saw a blast from inside the upper left box go wide of the near post in the 85th minute.

Houston head coach Dominic Kinnear said the Dynamo did not have a lot in the way of chances, and it took a scrappy goal from Kansas City to get the win.

"We spent 15-16 minutes trying to bash down the door to get a goal and we came close a couple of times, but we didn't get it," Kinnear said. "Obviously we would have loved to get more with the game tonight."

Oriol Rosell had a shot from just outside the left box stopped by Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall in the 10th minute.

Davis had a free kick from 25 yards out in the middle saved by Nielsen before it could creep inside the near post in the 25th minute.
