Pardew relieved after Newcastle win

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew believes a wave of relief rushed through all on Tyneside after their battling 2-1 win against QPR at Loftus Road on Sunday.

After falling behind to an early goal from Loic Remy, the striker Pardew tried and failed to sign in January, Newcastle banished their recent woes to fight back and claim the three points that should secure their Premier League status for another season.

Pardew spoke prior to the game about his fears that he would be sacked by Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, but their successful battle against the drop should ease some of the pressure mounting on the reigning LMA Manager of the Year.

"It's a sigh of relief for the city, for our county and for everyone associated with this fantastic football club," stated Pardew.

"We had to do it the hard way. Some of the decisions in this game were terrible in my opinion, on a day as crucial as this, but we still came through.

"When there's a big club in this position there is extra pressure, but once we got the goal, which was good fortune in terms of the decision for us, suddenly we settled down and were better then.

"We got a fantastic win. This is a tough place to come and Arsenal only just got past them last weekend. We've done it with a lot of key players missing. The injuries we have had this season would have resulted in most clubs getting relegated this season. We have come through it."

Pardew hinted that he will look to rebuild his Newcastle side this summer, as he suggested the club 'need to protect' themselves to ensure they are not dragged into a relegated battle again.

"The Premier League is so unforgiving," he added. "It was a nervous display from us (at QPR), but we said it didn't matter how the points came at this point in the season. It was a case of getting the big win and we got it."
